This is long and worth it.
I needed a marketing director.
Here's how I found and hired them.
First, over a few days I kept writing down all the things I needed them to take over for me:
- making ads
- making landing pages
- tracking customer journeys
- overseeing content
- overseeing AEO, SEO
- overseeing YouTube production (new person making employer focused videos)
- looking through my funnel and filling gaps
- lead gen and lead qualification
I did this to make sure I was shaping the role appropriately.
Then I went to OnlineJobs.ph and did 2 things:
1. I used Scout:
https://scout.onlinejobs.ph
2. I used my new job post writer:
https://start.onlinejobs.ph
When you're looking for someone who is highly talented, I've always found it's not sufficient to just post a job and hope the right person applies. You need to be proactive. Scout fills that role perfectly.
With Scout I told it generally what I was looking for:
"I'm looking for a CMO"
It asked clarifying questions so it could better focus the search. This actually helped me land on the title "Marketing Director" rather than CMO.
It gave me a bunch of people I could contact. They were legit. CMO types.
But I also realized...I want to have a job post for them to apply to so I have something for OnlineJobs Smart Shortlist to rate/rank them agains.
So I went to https://start.onlinejobs.ph and started the process.
I just answered the questions based on the suggestions it gave. It was relevant over and over again.
- skills
- tools
- experience
- wages
- hours
it showed me potential candidates to confirm if we were on the right path.
In the end, the job post description it came up with was really good, and the people it found for me were amazing.
I paid. $99.
What happened was everything I hoped would happen.
And...that's what should happen because that's how I designed it.
- The job post got posted immediately.
- The candidates it found for me based off my job post got invited to apply for me. I didn't have to do anything.
- I started getting applications within a few hours.
- I didn't look at any of them (don't waste my time).
I went back to Scout. I briefly looked at the profiles it had found me. I was in a hurry (date with my wife) so I just sent messages to a bunch of people asking them to apply to my job:

I'm looking for a CMO. I found you on OnlineJobs.ph via Scout AI and your profile looks appropriate.
I'm wondering if you'd be interested in applying.
It's a full-time role and pays well.

That's a link to my actual job post. I hadn't yet figured out "Marketing Director" over CMO.
THE NEXT DAY
The next morning I had 12 applicants.
Hoping some of them were good.
I didn't look at a single one of them.
I clicked "Smart Shortlist" and went to breakfast.
The Smart Shortlist takes a few minutes to analyze everything. We give it a TON of data. More than you could analyze, more than you have on the people. It takes the AI a few minutes (at least) to go through it all.
When I came back, I had a ranked list of candidates. It was awesome!
I immediately scrolled to the bottom to see if it actually worked (I mean...I know it works...I designed it and have tested it...but this was only the 2nd time I've used it for real).
YES!
There were a bunch of applicants with a rating of 23, 35, 41, 44, 48, 56, 65, 65, 70.
Blah. I never looked at these people.
Don't waste my time.
I got back to the top.
94!
91!
88!
YES!
These are the kinds of people I'm looking for.
I started looking through them and filtering.
- Fractional CMO - perfect qualifications - not interested in fractional (although website was IMPRESSIVE!) [Archive]
- Looks great - send a message
- Looks great - send a message
- hmmm...Looks good...but something I don't like. [Archive]
In the end, I had messaged 2 people.
Just 2.
But they were the right 2!
In the coming days I had a couple more applications. I clicked "Smart Shortlist" again. It ranked and rated them.
I archived people I didn't like.
I messaged people I did like.
I ended up emailing with 3 people total.
One came in cold from the job post.
One I had invited from Scout.
One had been invited to apply by the start.onlinejobs.ph system.
As I started asking questions via email, I had 2 interesting interactions:
1. She said "why don't we stop doing these emails and just jump on a call?"
I said "Because that's not how I roll. Answer the questions."
She never responded again. Exactly why I ask questions.
2. He said "Hey, you say you're the owner of OnlineJobs and that this job is with OnlineJobs.ph: prove it."
Meaning...he didn't trust me.
That confirmed my long time understanding that they don't trust you more than you don't trust them.
I was skeptical about hiring him. He was more skeptical about me.
I proved it.
I knew I had 2 great people. 2 of the right people.
Who to hire?
I asked them to create a video answering a couple questions for me.
James did it. His video was great. The quality was poor, but he was great. He clearly knew what he was talking about and I liked it.
And, it turned out he was one I had found from Scout. I had reached out to him.
He has been with us for 2 weeks now and is already making an impact.
The whole process probably took me an hour.
1 HOUR!
Total, including looking at profiles, messaging people, thinking about who to hire.
How is that possible? 1 hour?
It's because from the beginning I knew I was dealing with good, trustworthy people.
When you reach out to people, when they're notified about your job post rather than just accepting the people who are currently applying, it's a different game.
People who are applying are random.
People you reach out to aren't.
People who are applying can be fake. Or overstate who they are.
People you reach out to don't. They don't have any reason to be fake.
It has never been easier.
It has never been more secure.
It has never been more reliable.
And AI is making it easier still.
We'll write the job post for you.
We'll find the right people to invite for you.
We'll invite them to apply (game changer...even though I know it doesn't seem like it).
We'll rate and rank every applicant.
We'll tell you the questions to ask in an interview.
We'll tell you the test task to give.
We'll guarantee that you'll find someone great. If not, just reply to me.
